SRCS donates royally to projects This year the Student Rag Community Service (SRCS) of the Puk Campus of the North-West University donated approximately R220 000 to projects and institutions. These funds are collected in the province annually during Rag week and was handed over during the occasion to thirty organisations and individuals in North West. Read more

NWU receives firm heave for research The North-West University has just signed an agreement with the company Sasol Technology which stands out as the first of its kind country-wide.The unique research agreement sets the framework for greater cooperation in several fields and entails, on the one hand, that the University itself can identify projects for research and, on the other hand, that the company can identify projects as the need arises. Mechanical Engineering once more employed to the benefit of SA The Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU) has once more provided a first after the School of Mechanical Engineering was chosen to start a Centre for Advanced Manufacturing in South Africa. First black vice-rector for School of Theology The School of Theology has appointed Prof. Rantoa Letšosa as its first black vice-rector. Letšosa was appointed for the next three years during the recent session of the curators of the School of Theology. Letšosa, a lecturer in the subject group Practical Theology, now also is a member of the executive committee of the Faculty of Theology at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus. Read more
Carstens new vice-chairperson of SA Academy for Science and Art A seasoned linguist at the Puk Campus of the North-West University is the new vice-chairperson of the SA Academy for Science and Art. Sunette sets new Africa record Sunette Viljoen of the NWU Puk has just set a new Africa record during the annual World Student Championships in Serbia with her javelin throw. She surprised in the qualifying round with her throw of 65.43 m. It is a gigantic improvement of approximately three metres on her previous best of 62.24 m last year. Read more

Puk Professor receives research funding from Google© An extraordinary Professor at Engineering, who is also a scholar in language technology, forms part of an elite group of researchers that has received a research award from Google© . Youths care, is the message sent by Pukfm’s Community Cuddle During the recent period PUKfm launched a resourceful project to collect clothes for less fortunate children in the Potchefstroom area.In this project the learners of Volkskool High and Potchefstroom Gimnasium respectively were encouraged to fill huge cardboard boxes with clothes that are no longer worn. Museum doors thrown open on 20 May Prof. Annette Combrink, Campus Rector, visited the University Museum on Wednesday and amongst others, draped an honours colours blazer of days of yore over her shoulders. This year the history of the Potchefstroom Campus of the University dates back 140 years when it was decided on 20 May 1869 to start a School of Theology in Burgersdorp. Read more
TT Cloete surprised by his own poems One of South Africa’s most honoured litterateurs was “dumb-founded” and “sat like a child in amazement” when he was surprised during an honouring occasion with some of his own poems that had been set to music especially for the occasion. Saturday evening (16 Mei) , Prof. TT Cloete was surrounded by family members, colleagues, former students of his and friends of many years during this performance, “Seer en Siter”, which formed part of the homage in commemoration of his 85th birthday on 31 May. University helps financial needy post-graduates The North-West University (NWU) recently established a post-graduate loan scheme to help the needy students complete their degrees. According to Mr Danie Hefer (picture), Head of Financial Support Services at the Potchefstroom Campus, there are many students who previously qualified and received the NSFAS bursary loan at undergraduate level and who qualify for post-graduate studies at honours level. The impact of DDTt/malaria reviewed Experts from the North-West University and the University of Pretoria form part of an international group reviewing ddt/malaria impact. An international panel of health and toxicological scientists who convened to review recent studies on the link between DDT and human health; expressed concern that the current practice of spraying the pesticide indoors to fight malaria is leading to unprecedented – and insufficiently monitored – levels of exposure to it. Middelburg High School is NWU Puk’s first team rugby champion The first team of Middelburg High School won the title as first team champion in the NWU Puk Interprovincial sport series when they triumphed 31-23 against Oos-Moot High School of Pretoria. The show-down was the highlight of the day loaded with action on the Fanie du Toit sports field of the Pukke where the rugby, hockey and netball teams of twelve schools challenged one another. Lighting a candle in a world of darkness Lecturers of the School of Continuing Educational Training (SCE) on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University has decided to walk the extra mile to assist two blind students with their examinations. Ms. Hettie Sieberhagen (picture), a lecturer at this school, says a facilitator in Giyani, Ms. Jean Cumming, told them in 2006 about two blind students who had registered for the national professional teaching diploma. Books, CDs make little faces glimmer This year the Ferdinand Postma Library once more gladdened a couple of children when they presented a nursery school in Ikageng with a variety of children’s books, a CD player and CDs. The faces of more or less sixty pre-school children taken care of by Mama Dorah (a member of Clover’s Mama Africa project), shone when these presents were dropped off at their school.This year the library decided on this school due to the excellent work Mama Dorah (Tshabalala) has done thus far for these children who once roamed the streets while their parents were at work. Lecturer from the NWU receives highest award from Aeronautical Society of SA Attie Jonker, lecturer at the School of Mechanical Engineering at the North-West University’s Potcefstroom Campus were approached by the Aeronautical Society of South Africa (RAeS) to deliver a speech at their Yearly Memorial Lecture. What was believed to be a uncomplicated lecture then turned out to be a formal recognition of achievement when Jonker Sailplanes received the Neels van Niekerk Gold Medal Award for Outstanding Achievement in Aerospace Engineering from the RAeS. Six academics honoured by Academy for Science and Art Six academics of the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University were honoured by the SA Academy for Science and Art this year for outstanding research. These members of staff were nominated in categories that vary from linguistic science, teaching, mathematical, biological, pharmaceutical and botanical science. They will receive the awards on 27 June during the centenary festival of the Academy in Bloemfontein. Read more
